Veteran Spotlight: Captain John A. Gaberino, Jr.
Captain John A. Gaberino, Jr.
I was a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) graduate and served for two years of active duty from July 1966 through June 1968 as an officer in the U.S. Army infantry in the 4th Armored Division in Germany. Initially, I was a 1st lieutenant and then Captain in a mechanized infantry battalion, which was part of a tank brigade.
I was happy to serve my country and am proud of doing so.
How did your military service shape your view of leadership and teamwork?
I volunteered because I believed it was a patriotic thing to do. I was prepared to go to Vietnam if sent, but I was fortunate enough to spend my entire stint of active duty in Germany. Working alongside soldiers from all walks of life where lives were at stake required teamwork and trust.
How can we better support veterans?
Something as simple as acknowledging veterans goes a long way.
